Episode 56: Five Things to Consider With Your Grad School Offer

Episode 56: Five Things to Consider With Your Grad School Offer

Episode 56: Five Things to Consider With Your Grad School Offer

Here are five things to consider before you decide which one to accept.

1. Visit the campus. As I mentioned in Episode 23, where you go to grad school matters as much as what you major in. If a campus visit is offered, take it. If not, go there on your own. You might be surprised about what you find.

2. Consider the entire admission package. Does it include health insurance? Is tuition paid for or waived? What fees are you responsible for? Episode 28 cover all these topics and more.

3. Check to see how your offer stacks up. There aren’t a lot of resources, but you can get a general idea from sites like PhDStipends.com.

4. Make sure it’s the right program for you. Where do graduates go and what do they do? Can the program prepare you for the career you want today? Make sure you understand the higher education landscape and listen to Episode 19 if you don’t.

5. Finally, don’t forget about the April 15 Resolution. Listen to the very first episode of Grad-post for a more complete description, but basically you have until April 15 to accept an offer of financial support if it comes with your admission. Don’t let a program pressure you into making a decision on a fellowship or assistantship offer before then!
